Considered by many to be the first English novel, Daniel Defoe’s 1719 tale of a shipwrecked sailor explores the morals and beliefs of the era, ranging from religion and slavery, to nationalism and imperialism.

Robinson Crusoe, an English sailor, is forced to live alone on a deserted island after the rest of his shipmates drown in a terrible wreck. With no hope of rescue, he survives on the island for 28 years by making use of the animals and resources he finds on the land. However, the life he makes for himself becomes threatened when he discovers another footprint in the sand.
